The model took into account three contributions to the cell wall modulus: the elastic modulus of the bulk material alone (E1), the modulus of a porous material (E2) and the modulus of the air inside the cells (E3). The cell walls form a dense network with a small total strain of the cell walls as compared to the monolithic material. The material behaves as a solid material, with a slight swelling of the cells due to the voids in the structure. The model assumes that the cell walls are closed to the surrounding liquid and that a material is close to a perfect solid material if the volume change is negligible.
