Scholars state surah al kahf was revealed when the moon was full[3]. It was revealed in Mecca because of the status and political issues that occurred at the time of the revelation. Din al-Qays, out of the Quraysh tribe, vowed to destroy the Ka'bah and challenge Allah for its position as an object of pilgrimage and a symbol of Muslim faith. Also, the Muslims in Makkah were having problems because they worshiped at a place that was conquered by pagan Arabs. The Quraysh tribe relied on their religious leaders to mediate their problems to Allah. The Quraysh feared Allah would withdraw the beloved promised by the prophet Abraham. They therefore asked Allah's help to eradicate the infidels and to promote them as the new rulers in Makkah and the other inhabited places. The chapter begins with references to the characteristics of the abode of Prophet Abraham and the reality of the prophethood of Prophet Ishmael. Also, it tells the listeners to fear Allah, repent and seek refuge in Him.
The manhaj of the chapter (quran al-kitab) is quite simple. It starts with the appeal to Allah. He is the only one of His servants who is not threatened by the accursed QayBs. In the second verse, the listener is called to Islam and encouraged to fear Allah. The most important verses of the chapter are the first three verses of the chapter. The first verse tells the listener that Allah "hides the face of whoever is evil." The second verse tells the listener that Allah "hardens the heart of whoever is wicked." In contrast, the third verse tells the listener that Allah "softens the heart of whoever is good." So, the first three verses are warning verses. The listener is to persist in worshiping Allah in order to obtain His mercy, forgiveness and pleasure. The last verse of the chapter tells the listeners that they have a certain future after their death, thus the listeners should serve their Lord and affiliate themselves to Allah. In the last verse of the chapter, Allah reminds the listener to act before the time of the inevitable strike. d2c66b5586
