It is known to effect this supply of oxygen by utilizing the exhaust gas from an electric furnace containing a molten metal.

This type of known dross-inhibiting method comprises introducing a mixture of a stream of fresh air and a stream of hot exhaust air into the upper portion of the electric furnace. The mixture of fresh air and exhaust gas forms a reaction zone above the surface of the molten metal in the furnace. The mixture of fresh air and exhaust gas is then brought into contact with the surface of the molten metal. Since the temperature of the exhaust gas is higher than that of the fresh air, the exhaust gas carries the oxygen from the exhaust gas to the surface of the molten metal in the furnace. Thus, the formation of dross or sulfur on the surface of the molten metal is inhibited. This method is advantageous because it does not require the introduction of any type of additive into the atmosphere of the molten metal.
