All the old 16 bit addressing compatibility modes were left out of 64 bit mode when AMD developed their 64 bit extensions to the x86 processor. This makes it impossible for Windows on Windows 64 bit (WOW64) to support running older 16 bit software in the same way WOW32 is able to on a processor in 32 bit mode.
The 32 bit versions of Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 all still support 16 bit software - you just need to enable the legacy feature NTVDM (NT Virtual Dos Machine) and can even type command at a NT command prompt to switch to a DOS command line.
I have one physical Windows 2008 R2 server running Hyper-V. Running under Hyper-V I have a virtual Windows Server 2008 R2 server running Remote Desktop Services (Terminal Services). I'm preparing my applications using the "Install Application on Remote Desktop..." control panel app. So far so good. However, I am now trying to install FoxPro 2.6 which is a 16-bit windows application. When I try to install it I receive the message: "The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher". Is there any way around this? I'm in the middle of a large migration to thin-clients and foxpro 2.6, while it won't be around forever, is a very integral application for our data-entry personnel. How can I get this to work?

Remote software like TightVNC, DameWare, RAdmin would work and may be your best option...however you'd have to pay for all but TightVNC unless there is something else out there. It would not cost a lot to buy 1 or 2 licenses however.
The system requirements for installation provide the minimum operating system and disk space needed to successfully install the driver. After you've installed the driver, you can select the specific application software you want to use to access Visual FoxPro data.
I just upgraded from windows 7 64 to Windows 10 64. Now I am having problems with the Visual FoxPro driver. I am using the 32-bit ODBC manager (C:\Windows\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe). When I try to add or edit a Visual fox pro source I get the following error:
I installed vDOS but cannot change directories to the 16 bit DOS program; it says the directory does not exist. I have a 16 bit version of SkyGlobe, the old astronomy software and would like to run it on Windows 10. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.~~~ Chuck S
For quite some time i am searching to run my clipper exe programs. I have windows 10 64 bit but it has x86 32 bit run applications too. If any one help on this i will be much much thankful to him to resolve my unanswered quest
I used to work an old signmaking software Casmate on windows XP (SP 3).The old PC is gone. I purchased a DELL Optiplex with Windows XP (SP3) installed but every time I try to install Casmate it restart and send a massage of error.
We still use some specialized 16-bit software to communicate with older industrial controllers at work. They also use RS232 serial com-port, which is pretty rare on modern laptops. The USB dongles we´ve tried are far from perfect.
If you really need 16bit apps and games use virtual machines or windows to go flashdrives. Do not use x86 operating systems as your primary os. They are not worth it. Especially considering 8gb of ram became standard in most computers.
Also last night I tried to setup another 16 bit genealogy package GEDMATE 1.1 which ran on win 3.1. Unfortunately I got an error message something like the software was trying to communicate direct with the hardware and the program closed. I saw online that there was no solution to this error message for operating systems from win xp onwards.
In virtual box to get software to load into win 98 and earlier it just requires you to point the virtual disk to the file on your host pc. The only real drawback is every os pre win xp only runs in a small screen and there is no point loading graphics software as only 16 colours can be shown and at 256 resolution. Still for the legacy software that i want to run thats fine.
How do you now copy 16 bit programs on floppies to cd ? It is the program software that I want to transfer to CD, not files created by software. I am fearful about how long my windows 3.1 and windows 95 programs on the floppies will last. My windows 3.1 pc has long since died and so the floppies have been stored ever since. I need to either throw the floppies or try to load the software into Virtual box or another computer.
I am fearful in particular about how long win 3.1 and win 95 programs on the floppies will last as many of my old floppies with windows 98 are now failing hence mu interest to explore how I might transfer them to CD.
I need to know whether I need to use a specialist service to do this or whether it is as simple as using a cd rom and burning software. Also if I can simply use a cd rom must the burning software also be 16 bit. Please advise.
I wrote a 16 bit c program to mimic the windows 3.1 graphics using 640×480 graphics resolution. That was in 2005 just to have a real feel of linked lists and other data structures and memory management features. I wanted to make a video of that for documentation purpose. Just reminiscence and hobby.
I am a fan of Visual FoxPro for Windows because it provides a variety of options and features across the different windows. The most helpful window for me to use can be one called the Class browser, which allows me to view the classes within the same class library in the EXE file I have. I also like the Code window because it allows me to write and modify code. The language of programming is highly useful in every way. I am hoping that Microsoft will provide complete support to this programming language in the future.
Windows 8 and 10 are not very different from previous versions. Sometimes Visual FoxPro (VFP) may not run as expected when it comes to different versions of Windows. FoxPro for windows acts more like an old 16-bit utility (that is out of tune with the modern world) rather than a real windows application.
Hello Jos! Great work with vDos! The best DOS enviroment for 64 bit OS by far! I use Foxpro 2.0 and I just can get it to work if I run "Fox demo" and then end the demo application. If I try to run Fox (or Foxpro or Foxprox...) I get the following message: "Cannot create temp file on .c:\vdos" (or something similar to that...). I´m running vDos with administrative privilegies and I get this error only when I try to open foxpro without calling a .app or .prg file. Any ideas why this might be happening?
Hi Jos! My vDos C: drive was assigned to C:\vDos and Foxpro was a subdirectory in it. I did as you said and I´m still getting the same message: "Cannot create program workspace: Unable to create temporary work file(s)." Difference is that now foxpro won´t start even when I use the "Fox demo" command line... Don´t know if it will help, but: I´m running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bits on a Core i3 1st generation with HD Graphics and 4Gb RAM. Also there is another thing I forgot to tell you: Even before the "Fox demo" command only worked if it was the very first command I issued after getting the vDos prompt (weird, isn't it?).
I have 20 machines running an old FoxPro Dos program in Windows 7 32 bit. They run ok. The company ordered 5 machines using Windows 7 64 bit. All of these machines are laptops. When the machines are used standalone (not attached to our network), the software looks in c:\newgl c:\oldmf. When the machines are connected to our network, the program looks in f:\new f:\oldmf. The f drive is the shared network drive.

Visual FoxPro is an object oriented and procedural programming language that has been developed by renowned software giant company Microsoft. Visual FoxPro has been derived from FoxPro which was developed by Fox Software in the mid-80s. In the early 90s Fox Technologies was jelled in Microsoft and after that FoxPro got some impressive features and got the name Visual FoxPro. You can also download Dev C++.

When any software is developed it has an expected lifetime. For commercial organisations like Microsoft, they are continually releasing new software to take advantage of the improvements in new hardware to make our lives easier. They cannot support every version of their software indefinitely. Microsoft commits to supporting a particular version for a certain period of time. During this window, they will provide bug fixes, provide upgrades and otherwise generally support their product. Microsoft chose to stop developing Visual FoxPro to concentrate their resources on other products in their line. Visual FoxPro 9 (VFP9) was the last release and the extended support period ended in 2015. This means that Microsoft is under no obligation to provide bug fixes to the language. Nor do they need to ensure that Visual FoxPro applications continue running. 2b1af7f3a8
