It is also the case that many students do not take this type of course seriously. Therefore, it is the author's hope that those who do take the course do so with some understanding about how what they learn will benefit their lives and the lives of others. This may be because the author was in the same position as some of my former students. In addition, it may be because the activities that the author has chosen to use are real-life scenarios that students can relate to. Therefore, I believe that this text can have a positive effect on the students who use it. When the author first brought this idea to my attention, it was a bold idea. However, I was impressed with how many of the students who used this book approached and completed the language activities.
I also hope that teachers find this book useful for a wide range of purposes. I have already had several students volunteer to help me tutor the class that is currently using this book. As has been the case in previous years, I have had an opportunity to use the book for various purposes. For example, I had an opportunity to use it to help develop a course that is required for a nursing degree (in the US), and this course is designed to develop students' listening, oral communication, and critical thinking skills. Unfortunately, we were not able to teach English as a medium of instruction in the course, so most of the activities and activities that can be developed to enhance other critical skills had to be developed in another manner. However, I still used the book in the English language course to help prepare students for the more complex writing assignments that they will be required to complete in the nursing program.
For those who are curious, there are various reasons that the author chose to use this particular book. In order to assess student progress, the author hopes to form a case study from the work she has done with the students in her classes. In addition, the author has decided to use the book to help develop a group of exchange students that the author will be guiding for an organization of her own. Therefore, the author hopes to obtain feedback from these students about the benefits of the book as well as the experience of working with the author.
One of the design principles of this text is to introduce a topic or issue that is controversial, so that students will be encouraged to speak about it at the next class meeting. They will discover that they can be successful in classrooms where they are forced to speak during class time, and that they can profit from speaking and discussion in classes where they are expected to listen to their colleagues and other students. However, they will also gain many benefits from facing the problems that others have had to solve in real life.
Some units contain the same kinds of basic topics, while others include a range of topics, especially those that allow students to develop their own points of view. One feature of this text that makes it particularly useful is that the text provides students with a broad range of differing perspectives from which to choose from.
