Throwing caution to the wind and with Athena's blessing, Kratos travels back in time to Sparta. To his surprise, he has no idea that he is Kratos from the future, and immediately meets his father, Zeus. He tells Kratos about the prophecy, and how he plans to mold Kratos into a god himself. Kratos is intrigued, but later, the two battle each other. Kratos defeats Zeus with Athena's help, but he ultimately decides to sacrifice himself to prove to Athena that she is his true daughter. Kratos is transported to the River Styx, where he sees his own death. At the same time, Athena takes the form of his dead wife, Deimos, and gives Kratos his peace. Kratos then takes his place in the Underworld as the God of War, and becomes Athena's true son.

In a post-credits scene, Ares returns to the ruins of the Alhazan Temple, where he enters Kratos' body and tries to take his place, but Kratos kills him. Before he dies, Ares explains to the world that Kratos' spirit is still alive and calls for Kratos to come and face his father, in the event that Kratos doesn't do so himself. Kratos begins to walk away, but turns around and attacks, killing his father and the Hel-Walking Garm. As Kratos lies dying, his body dissolves into the elements.

The pair makes their way to the coast of Elysium, where they meet up with Atreus, who has found Freyr and the Aesir. Kratos and Atreus are then taken to the palace of Ares where they meet Athena, who reveals that she, along with Persephone and Artemis, were the gods that had appeared to Kratos at the end of his journey. Athena is surprised to learn of his newly-acquired fire-related power, and she and Kratos go to the Temple of Hephaestus to observe the fire steeds. At that moment, an exhausted Ares arrives with the rest of the Aesir and comes to meet Athena, who welcomes him back to the gods. The group then travels with Kratos to Olympus.
